Premier Morris Iemma announced the winner at the Sydney Opera House, where the finalists' designs were on display until 2 April. "I am pleased to announce that a local team led by Sydney designers has beaten entries from some of the world's leading architects to design the biggest CBD redevelopment in decades," Mr Iemma said. "Its stand-out feature is a massive new harbour park covering more than 11 continuous hectares of prime waterfront land." The winning design includes: - A massive new waterfront park comprising more than 50% of the site, with the northern headland to be reserved as open space; - A waterfront promenade completing the link between Woolloomooloo and the Anzac Bridge; and - Building footprints restricted to approximately 30% of the site to preserve open space and community amenities. The international competition was announced last year to encourage public discussion and to ensure a benchmark in waterfront renewal and attracted 137 entries from leading architectural and landscape design teams around the world. More details Eco-friendly design to make a splash in the dishwasher department Environmentalists could soon be pushing for everyone to buy a dishwasher thanks to young designer Alex Gilmour. The 2005 industrial design graduate is up for two major student design awards for a concept that soon will make one of the most desirable home appliances guilt free - using less water than hand washing and no detergent. Ms Gilmour's "Swash" design is a first - a self-contained microwave oven-scale unit that will take up to a four-place setting of dishes and clean and sterilise them using steam. For more information please email walterbenjamin@uts.edu.au More details IDEAS IN ACTION : 2006 social inquiry public seminar series The second seminar for 2006 will be presented by Heather Goodall on the topic of Rewriting Green History. Rewriting Green History is a case study of the Georges River in south western Sydney from the 1940s to 1990s which opens up a number of questions about how concerns about greenspace, native bushland and conservation were expressed immediately after WW2, in forms which are focussed on suburban land, not 'wilderness'. Local grassroots community members in these working class suburbs tried to address the difficult problems about how to save bushland and have high populations living nearby and using it in a range of ways. These groups are often disparaged today as not 'green' enough or even as 'environmental vandals' because of the interventions they made in their suburban environment. But their local knowledge, their anxiety about the rising pollution they were witnessing in their own suburbs and their sustained commitment to a healthy environment led to the preservation of areas which were not 'wilderness' enough to attract much high profile 'green' interest in the 1960s or 1970s but which are today prized as precious retreats for both people and native species in the middle of Sydney's densest suburban area.
