ALUMNI NEWS

Bright new spark in filmmaking

Filmmaker Anh Koa 'Johnny' Tran has won the Bright Spark Award at the 2008 Sony Tropfest with his black-and-white film, My Brother, My Sanctuary. This award follows his success at the Golden Eye Awards at UTS, where he won best editing for his film Reminiscent Cliff, and the Reel Deal Film Festival, where he was a finalist for his film Cupcake.

"My three films have a similar theme: they look at how someone's past affects them in the present. I'm interested in how people view historical events, or relationships, with nostalgia - making them sweeter than they really were. Or, alternatively, more bitter," said Johnny.

His winning film is a family drama that looks at violence in school, focussing on two warring sets of siblings. The Bright Spark prize is a 12-month scholarship valued at $6000 and allows 50 people to join together and make a feature film.

A graduate of the Masters of Media Arts and Production, Johnny originally started making films as a hobby but his early success has made him take the art form more seriously. Over the past few years he has been working as a freelance filmmaker, largely in the community sector.

"In the years to come I'd like to be directing films and writing - I enjoy directing other people's work," said Johnny.

Designing on The Edge

Industrial Design graduate Brad Stebbing has taken out the 2008 student prize at The Edge, a design and innovation element of the Australian International Furniture Fair. He won the coveted award for his Melee Modular Pendant Lamp (shown above), made from sustainable plywood and featuring a collection of little wooden men.

As a teenager, Brad undertook a traditional cabinet-making course in London where he built up his portfolio of work. This helped him gain admission to the UTS Industrial Design degree, which he completed last year. During his studies, he won the 2006 Cormack Packaging Innovation Award for his innovative child-safe lid concept and was invited to create lighting fixtures for the annual end-of-year design show at UTS.

After graduation, the accolades kept flowing: in 2007, Brad reached the top three finalists of the Breville Young Designer Award and the top 10 of the Qantas Spirit of Youth Award.

An ambitious designer, 24-year-old Brad sought a wide variety of work experience during his degree, working in design consultancies, furniture design, set design, prototyping facilities, high end stationary and injection moulded packaging. He has now started to design and produce his own products, while offering his design services throughout Sydney on a contract basis.

Each Melee is made to order and laser cut in Sydney. At the moment, a large Melee costs about $800 but Brad plans to release a more affordable version in recycled polypropylene later in the year. For more information, visit www.bradstebbing.com

GRADUATE PROFILE

E-campaigning for human rights

While Amnesty International is still the international flagship campaigner for human rights, the internet has given rise to "more nimble" organisations that are having considerable success on smaller stages, according to Masters of Arts in Humanities and Social Sciences (Research) graduate, Damien Spry.

Damien looks at the way modern communications have changed strategies in the fight for human rights in a new book, Doing the Rights Thing: Approaches to Human Rights and Campaigning.

The UTS researcher examines recent human rights and advocacy campaigning in Australia in a book that fittingly is being distributed electronically by free download from UTS ePress. The book considers Amnesty International's long-term, universalising approach - based on international human rights principles - alongside smaller, local campaigns focused on concrete political outcomes.

"Amnesty remains the model for international action on human rights issues, but the success of a group like Chilout - formed for the specific purpose of releasing children from mandatory detention in Australia - shows there are other ways to generate localised public support and action," Damien said.
