UTS alumni's Mission in Malta
1997 communication graduate Deborah Abela will release her latest children's novel, Mission in Malta next month. The eighth novel in Abela's popular Max Remy series, Mission in Malta was inspired by the author's trip to the Mediterranean island in 2005: "My father and grandfather were born there, and I decided to set my next novel there as a result of a long awaited two month stay last year," she explains.
Writing one novel per year is not enough for this children's novelist, who earlier in 2006 put the final touches to the third book in the Jasper Zammit (Soccer Legend) series, written, says Abela, "with the limitless and invaluable advice of soccer hero, Johnny Warren."
After seven years writing and producing children's TV Abela turned her talents to writing children's fiction for 8-12 year olds. She has obviously got the formula right: 11 novels later she is the darling of young bookworms across the globe, and her Max Remy Superspy series is enjoyed by children in six countries, including the US and UK.
Abela recently won a New York Gold Oppenheim Toy and Book Award and was shortlisted for the Australian Aurealis Awards and KOALA Awards.
For more details on Deborah Abela's work please visit her website: www.maxremy.com.au

UTSpeaks lecture: When green water is best - achieving a water resource smart Australia
We have lived for too long as if water from our taps will flow forever, regardless of the natural cycles and processes that replenish it.
We are aghast at the idea of water rate increases or any hint of disruption to supply.
We seem to want governments to make new water sources available, as if by magic.
This free public lecture, introduced by the Hon. Pam Allan MP, will detail crucial issues and initiatives associated with Australia's most valuable resource - not just water supply and conservation, but most importantly, the real value of services that nature provides to humans for free.

Sydney Futures Twilight Symposia
Sydney is a global metropolis sliding into chaos. A beautiful city with a declining infrastructure, a city once characterised by its concerns for social justice, it is now harder to live in, unhealthier, more dangerous, more expensive, and far less equitable than its potential holds.
In a desire to stimulate debate among citizens about the future of our city and its region, the University of Technology, Sydney is sponsoring six twilight symposia focusing on critical issues in the city's future.
August's symposium, Creating the city: arts culture and the cosmopolis, features pannelists David Throsby, Peter Murphy, Tiffany Lee-Shoy and examines how global cities are concentrations of creativity - with creativity drawing investment, population demand, and feeding on this growth. Can Sydney develop further as a global creative city and what will it take?
Date: Thursday 24 August, 2006, 4pm to 7pm
Location: City - Broadway, CB04. Level 2 (entrance on Harris Street), Room 38
Cost: free.
