WHAT'S HAPPENING AT UTS November 2007 - UTS:Alumni End of Year Reception The End of Year Reception attracted a wide and sometimes vocal cross section of alumni from UTS and its antecedent organisations. It was an excellent opportunity to reconnect with former student friends and colleagues as well as teachers. In the lead up to the 20th Anniversary of UTS becoming a University UTS:Alumni wants to get in touch with alumni from UTS and its antecedent organisations. If you know anyone who graduated from UTS and its antecedents, please ask them to get in touch by forwarding this link. We'd like to involve as many alumni as possible in the 20th Anniversary celebration.

Business Graduate Runs New York Marathon
In early November, Adrian Raftery completed the New York marathon and in the process became the leading Australian charity fundraiser in the race. He ran the gruelling 42km course across the five boroughs of New York City in memory of his father who passed away last year. Adrian raised almost $34,000 for the Heart Foundation.
Close to 40,000 runners competed and raised over US$12 million for charities around the world, including in excess of $204,000 for Raftery's charity the National Heart Foundation of Australia.
Spokesperson from the Heart Foundation, Lisa Herden, was thrilled with the fundraising efforts. "With each donation of $500 we can fund a world class heart research project for 2 days. So due to the efforts of Adrian & team Rafters as well as the other 18 runners, we can now fund a project for 408 days which is simply brilliant," she said.
When a former AFL team mate of Adrian's passed away in July last year from a heart attack, aged just 46 it made him more determined to help raise funds for the Heart Foundation. "It brings a smile to my face knowing that our funds will help save the life of at least one Australian in the future. It makes all the hard work and pain worthwhile. My favourite part of the race was running up the top of a hill in Brooklyn where a local school band was playing the Rocky theme song. I got to the top as they were reaching the climax of the song and the crowd were going crazy."
As to running more marathons; "I definitely won't be doing another marathon again - they are too punishing on big boofy blokes like me, but I would consider doing the Kokoda Trail or climbing Mount Everest down the track. I also have an eye on the World Masters Games in Sydney in 2009. But whatever I choose I will definitely be helping out a charity again. They are the true superstars and deserve all the support that they can get."

IT Graduate Awarded Canada Research Chair in Health Informatics
IInformation Technology PhD graduate Dr Carolyn McGregor has been awarded one of only two prestigious Canada Research Chairs in Health Informatics at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT).
IThe chair will be used to establish a Health Informatics Laboratory on campus at the UOIT where she is Associate Professor with the faculties of Business, IT and Health Science. It will use simulation to conduct leading-edge research work with the potential to improve survival rates for premature babies; provide access to neonatologists in remote areas of Canada; and help with earlier detection of infection.
I"I'm extremely pleased and honoured to be leading crucial research work that has vast potential for intensive care patients - in particular those in neonatal care - here in Canada and around the globe," said Dr. McGregor. "Advancements in health informatics offer great potential to save and improve the quality of life for many Canadians and very possibly people all over the world."
IThe $1.5 million chair will support fundamental work focused on the simulation for current and future functions within intensive care units and in particular neonatal intensive care units. Dr McGregor's research could hold the answer to addressing the absence of neonatologists in remote areas of Canada by enabling simulated face-to-face encounters between patients and specialists and supporting babies born in Third World counties. In addition, it has the potential to reduce costs of care, assist in identifying new disease and treatments and improve patient management.

Emily Mudge, Bachelor of Engineering, Bachelor of Arts in International Studies, Diploma in Engineering Practice, 2005

Project engineer Emily Mudge is building houses in the post-tsunami reconstruction in war-torn Sri Lanka. The buildings are often damaged by bullets or bombs before they can be occupied, but Emily says the work is rewarding, the people inspiring and the opportunity to make a difference very valuable.
The 27 year old recently won the ACT Telstra Young Business Women's Award.
"I am most excited about the encouragement that such a prestigious award brings to women in the construction industry," she says.
"For the last 10 years, the percentage of women in construction has not increased and I see this as an opportunity to bring attention to the great reward and diverse experiences that a career in construction can offer. It can be challenging to establish oneself in a chosen profession, but more than anything I have found that maintaining the right attitude in any situation is the best supplementary tool to use as we continue to build on our practical knowledge and experiences."
Emily is currently a project engineer with Bovis Lend Lease (BLL). Her work in Sri Lanka is a partnership venture between BLL and the UN.
Earlier this year, she won the first ISIS Projects Future Leader Award at the 2007 Property Council of Australia/Rider hunt Innovation and Excellence Awards. While her work demands technically expertise, Emily never loses sight of other issues, like environmental sustainability and the human side of things. She was the BLL representative on a research project into recycling crushed concrete, being developed by Rinker Australia.
Please keep us updated with your career news, or any achievements and awards you may have received. We are preparing our next e:Connect and would love to hear from you.
