ALUMNI NEWS

The Goat That Ate Time

Lucinda Schreiber has worked her way through three creative courses that have taken her from the Melbourne suburbs to the star-studded red carpet in the US.

Schreiber completed a Graduate Diploma in Graphic Design and a Masters in Animation at UTS. "Animation combines art, design and storytelling," she explains. Her major work from the Masters, an animated short film called The Goat That Ate Time, raised Lucinda's artistic career to a whole new level.

The film is intended as a modern children's fable. The main character, the goat, begins by eating cuckoo clocks and watches, and graduates to eating Times Square. "It's a light-hearted stab at our time-obsessed society," says Schreiber.

The film won her the TTS's Golden Eye Audience Award, followed by Best Film or Video by an Emerging Director at the prestigious International Children's Film Festival in Chicago. The American win gave her a taste of celebrity as all award-winners were flown to Chicago and lavished with first-class treatment.

Schreiber has recently secured the Best Short Animation Award at Australia's Inside Film Awards and was one of four nominees shortlisted for an Australian Film Institute Award last year. There is no doubt that more awards will follow as Schreiber's body of work continues to grow.

Design By Them

Industrial design graduate, Sarah Gibson, quit her full-time job only 12 months after graduation. Inspired to start a new venture, she set up her own business in 2007, Design By Them, with her partner, Nicholas Karlovasitis.

"We mainly focus on furniture, lighting and home accessories," she says. As well as designing her own products, Gibson acts as a consultant for other businesses.

"In terms of our consulting, we design anything. At present we are both working on a medical nose plug and a large interior design project for an office!" she says. Their products always begin as sketches before graduating into paper models and computer drawings.

While being an industrial designer is creative, Gibson says you also have to be able to turn ideas into reality. This can range from complex solutions to something as simple as changing the base material of a product.

We received a great response from the survey and, as a result, we are now developing an online job service that will be available exclusively to UTS alumni. GRADUATE PROFILE

Moshe Rosenzveig

Head On
Head On was founded in 2004 by professional photographer Moshe Rosenzveig. The annual photography competition was created by Moshe to exhibit great photos that were overlooked by the Art Gallery of New South Wales.

In its first year, there were no corporate sponsors or prize money, but that didn't deter hundreds of photographers entering the awards. The exhibition in Sydney, displaying works by the finalists, then proceeded to attract thousands of visitors.

Last year, Head On was sponsored by over a dozen major companies, including Canon and Adobe, and the prize money has reached $30,000. It is now one of Australia's major photographic portrait exhibitions.

The show's main selection criteria are the quality and impact of the image, rather than the celebrity of the photographer or subject. "The show has strong pictures of real people, in real life," says Moshe.

This year's finalists will be selected by renowned Australian photographer Stephen Dupont, Byron McMahon Gallery Director Sandra Byron and Moshe.

Moshe graduated from UTS with a Masters in Journalism. He is an award-winning television producer and director, photojournalist, commercial photographer and educator, whose career in the visual arts and media spans 25 years. He currently works as a photographer and teaches photojournalism at UTS.

For further details about the show and the 2008 competition, visit www.headon.com.au.

Please keep us updated with your career news, or any achievements and awards you may have received. We are preparing our next e:Connect and would love to hear from you.
