Indigenous graduates secure top jobs

Indigenous UTS Communication graduates Sophia Romano and Ryan Griffen are in a good place. After graduating last month, they have taken their communication skills to a professional level: Ryan has secured a position at the Nine Network and Sophia is now working at the Australian Customs Service.
With support from Jumbunna Indigenous House of Learning - including the academic and cultural support, provision of a study space and tutoring schemes - both excelled while completing their degrees.
"While at UTS, I learnt all the up-and-coming techniques in film and I am now working for a [film] production company at the Nine Network," said Ryan. He is currently involved with the Indigenous Producers Initiative, run by the Australian Film Commission.
Meanwhile, Sophia completed an International Studies component that allowed her to travel and study overseas. "I went to Trieste in the north-east of Italy. I enjoyed living with, and trying to integrate into, another culture." She is now an officer at the Australian Customs Service and is considering taking on postgraduate study in Middle Eastern and Central Asian studies and diplomacy.
Jumbunna Indigenous House of Learning is establishing an Indigenous Alumni Network. If you are an Indigenous graduate, please contact Alisa Duff on (02) 9514 1939 or alisa.duff@uts.edu.au

Timely designs

A niche business idea and a talent for design has led to Christina Caddy-Gold's creations gracing the pages of In Style, Madison, Who and FHM, as well as the wrists of the world's top celebrities.
Christina graduated from the UTS Masters of Design in 2004 and took her thesis project from the page to the studio floor: establishing Caddy Design Australia, a cutting-edge wholesale watch design company. It is the only one of its kind in Australia.
"After I got a High Distinction at UTS, I decided that the product I was designing had real potential in the fashion market," said Christina.
Her watches are now distributed to more than 2,300 retail outlets around the world including Australia, the UK, Spain, Norway, France and the USA. Caddy Design Australia was the winner of The Best Jewellery & Fashion Product at the prestigious 2007 Gift Awards presented by Reed Gift Fairs. The company was also a finalist in the 2006 Reed Gift Awards.
With business booming, Christina has recently relocated to larger premises in Alexandria and opened a showroom in Bondi. Visit www.caddydesign.com to find out more.

Support scholarships at UTS
This year, UTS is working to increase the funds available to enable disadvantaged students to complete a course at the University. UTS is appealing to the business community, UTS staff, alumni and other generous people to help the University fund scholarships for students in need.
Donations to the fund are fully tax-deductible and your contribution will be of lasting benefit to the students and to society. Already many students, from disadvantaged backgrounds or with disabilities, have benefited from this generous support.
I would like to support a scholarship at UTS.
