ALUMNI NEWS

WEST Hits Australian Cinemas

UTS Media Arts and Production alumnus, Matt Reeder has produced the brave Australian film WEST, the story of cousins living a desolate life in Sydney's western suburbs. "At first glance WEST is about not particularly charismatic alienated youth. But I think it's much more than that. It's almost Shakespearean in its tragedy, a grandness emerges from the seediness of unlovely couplings, being betrayed, the violence, the lack of love." Margaret Pomeranz.

WEST is in Australian cinemas from Thursday 5 July.

Singing Praise for The Home Song Stories

UTS alumnus, Liz Watts co-produced the highly praised film The Home Song Stories, a true story about Rose, a glamorous Shanghai nightclub singer, who struggles to survive in seventies Australia with two young children.

The Home Song Stories continues to generate a buzz, with the announcement that the film has been selected to screen in the Contemporary World Cinema program at the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival in September.

This latest accolade follows the film's international success at the Berlin Film Festival and the rousing response from local audiences at the recent Sydney and Adelaide Film Festivals. It will also screen at next month's Melbourne International Film Festival.

The Home Song Stories is in Australian cinemas from 23 August.

Congratulations and good luck Liz!

Law Alumnus Achieving in New York

Congratulations to 2002 Master of Law and Legal Practice graduate, Olivia Dixon (formerly Maloney), who has been accepted into the prestigious Doctor of Juridical Science degree at New York University (NYU) on a full three-year scholarship.

Only three to four students worldwide are accepted into the NYU program each year. Olivia has been approved to conduct an empirical study into the linking of hedge fund activism to corporate governance. She wishes to commence a career in academia upon completion of the course.

The Gareth Ivory Foundation - Train an East Timorese Teacher for $20

When Gareth Ivory graduated from journalism, he wasted no time jumping into a training position with the ABC in May 2004. Tragically Gareth, a scholastic high achiever, talented sportsman and gifted musician, was diagnosed with leukaemia and died in October of the same year.

Gareth was dedicated to justice and helping others. His family and many friends set up a foundation in his memory, The Gareth Ivory Foundation, to contribute to making the world a better place.

Angelina, Ercilia, Jaquelina and Jucelina, all young East Timorese women, would like to train as teachers and serve their community. But, like many young people from East Timor, poverty prevents them.

The Gareth Ivory Foundation is raising funds to allow Angelina, Ercilia, Jaquelina and Jucelina to commence their teacher training. With donations of just $20 each from 200 people we can support their teacher training for a year.

Join the 200 by making a donation of $20 towards relieving poverty and rebuilding the education system of East Timor.

To support The Gareth Ivory Foundation education program in East Timor, go to: www.garethivoryfoundation.org.au

GRADUATE PROFILE

Nora Martin

Bachelor of Arts in Communication (Information) 2005

Nora completed her degree in 2005 and is now Library Manager at Australia's anti-money laundering regulator, and specialist financial intelligence unit - AUSTRAC.

Librarians are at the forefront of the information revolution. It is essential that the librarian of the twenty-first century is equipped to manage information. Nora's career in the 'library world' began over 20 years ago. "I started as a general library assistant at Manly library. Over time I witnessed numerous changes in information and document delivery technologies." Nora strived to develop professionally, enrolling in Information Management at UTS in 2002. She graduated with a credit average in 2005.

After graduating, Nora secured her dream job as Research Librarian at Fairfax Media. She provided high quality research and information services to journalists at Fairfax, working on local print publications as well as helping journalists from various interstate and overseas bureaus.

"The Research Library collections at Fairfax include books, microfilm, CDs, journals and magazines, newspapers, and clipping files. The research tasks I did ranged from quick three minute reference questions to three week research projects. I researched interesting topics like histories of the PM's approval ratings; timelines of conflict in the Middle East; statistics on broadband uptake in Australia; and land title for a NSW property. Working in the world of current affairs and corporate media information is stimulating, no day is the same."

When Nora's casual contract expired at Fairfax, she was snapped up by AUSTRAC. She is now developing a modern, streamlined Library and Research Centre that supports the information needs, mission, values and objectives of AUSTRAC.

"I firmly believe in education and continued professional development. Libraries and library workers exist to make a difference. Whether they are a public or tertiary library, or within a governmental or business organisation, they are instrumental in creating better places to live, work, and learn."

Please keep us updated with your career news, or any achievements and awards you may have received. We are preparing our next e:Connect and would love to hear from you.

LUCKY MILES
It's 1990 and an Indonesian fishing boat abandons Iraqi and Cambodian refugees in a remote part of the Western Australia. Although most are quickly caught by officials, three men with nothing in common but their misfortune and determination to escape arrest, begin an epic journey into the heart of Australia.
