Alumnus Hugh Jackman shines at UTS dinner
Australian star of screen and stage, Hugh Jackman, received two prestigious awards from UTS at a gala dinner on Friday 23 May marking the University's 20th anniversary. Jackman, who graduated from UTS in 1991 with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication, was awarded the 2008 Chancellor's Alumni Award for Excellence. The actor also received the UTS Towering Achievement Award, a special award celebrating the University's anniversary. "The University is proud to have contributed to shaping an individual of such inestimable qualities and we wish him the very best for the years ahead," Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ross Milbourne said. VC unveils plans for the new UTS
At the 20th Anniversary alumni event, the VC unveiled plans for a major development program which will transform the UTS City campus into an environmentally sustainable university with world-class teaching and learning facilities. Plans include a new Library in Building 2 which adjoins the UTS Tower; a cinema on Broadway and expanded entryway into the Tower building; two new student accommodation buildings; improved student amenities and an art gallery. The green space on the City campus has already doubled this year, following the demolition of the former TAFE building on Jones Street (artist's impression of the green space is pictured above). The walkway will also be extended behind the DAB building, linking the Haymarket and City campuses. For the first time, it will be possible to walk on a pedestrian-only path from Haymarket all the way to the western end of the campus, bordering Abercrombie Street. Formal plans will be revealed in the weeks ahead and we will keep all alumni informed. Join the UTS team and marquee at the City to Surf! Your chance to be part of planning at UTS! Alumni secure Jet for Fred Hollows tribute

One of Australia's biggest bands, Jet, has joined forces with The Fred Hollows Foundation, releasing a new video clip about the life and work of the renowned eye surgeon. The film clip was directed, edited and produced by three UTS graduates: Joe Boughton-Dent (director and producer), Hugh Rutherford (editor) and Louise Kan (photographer).
"To be able to really portray the emotion attached to restoring sight, you need to be able to show people the process," said Joe, who graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Communication in 2004.
"That's why Hugh and I travelled to some of the countries where The Foundation works - including Kenya, Nepal and Rwanda. Once we had some footage, it made sense to produce something for YouTube," said Joe, who is the Media and Communications Coordinator at The Foundation.
Jet's lead singer, Nic Cester, said he hoped the clip encourages people to donate to keep Fred's work going. "For the cost of a CD you can help someone see again. I just hope this clip helps get that message out there," said Nic.
Jet's song, Shine On, is the soundtrack to the clip and it can be viewed at: www.youtube.com/watch?v=V6QsjtIoj8E. To find out more about The Fred Hollows Foundation or to donate, visit www.hollows.org.au or phone 1800 352 352.

UTS celebrates 20 years: Past, Present and Future exhibition
The Past, Present and Future exhibition is the story of UTS told through photographs. This exhibition, held in the entrance to the UTS Tower, showcases UTS's achievements as an innovator in teaching, learning and research. The exhibition runs till the end of June.
Nothing Changes, Changes Everything at UTS:Gallery
This two-person exhibition creates a dialogue between works that reflect on what has changed and what remains the same amidst the revolutions wrought by technology. Working across painting, installation, video and printing, the artists - Mark Titmarsh and Justin Trendall - explore the proposition that 'nothing changes and everything changes'. In Titmarsh's work this is articulated around the idea of expanded painting. By constrast, Trendall takes up these themes of transformation and return through the construction of imaginary monuments that collapse the present into the past. The exhibition runs from Tuesday 3 June to Friday 4 July.

Seeking justice in Africa

Michelle Sanson has been weaving her way in and out of the halls of UTS since 1991. She has amassed degrees in Business, Law, Education and, this year, a Doctorate of Philosophy in Law. While building a strong corporate background over this time - working with clients such as ANZ and Hyundai - she continues to be drawn to the wild and often dangerous continent of Africa.
Michelle left for Namibia in February to be an independent trial observer for the US non-government organisation, Lawyers Without Borders. While her attendance at the trial is on a pro bono basis, her expenses are part-funded by the UTS Faculty of Law.
"Everyone does their own service, be it locally or internationally. Some people might send money to a World Vision Child, others visit an elderly neighbour for a cup of tea… It doesn't have to be massive: it doesn't have to be Africa. Africa is just my thing," said Michelle.
She will report on the procedural aspects of the Caprivi trials. The Caprivi strip in Namibia is home to the Lozi tribe of about 100,000 people. In their fight for self-determination, 132 people were charged with treason, sedition and murder. They have complained of torture and 11 have died in custody awaiting trial.
Michelle has worked in Africa before, conducting research and working in orphanages. She said that while Australians have access to justice and good governance, she wants to be in Africa because "that's where some people are actually dying of starvation".
In between her pro bono work and studies, Michelle has worked at the United Nations in Vienna, penned a text titled Essential International Trade Law and is writing a mystery novel.
