Supreme high for new law graduate
If being one of the newest solicitors admitted to the Supreme Court of NSW after sixteen gruelling weeks of Practical Legal Training is not achievement enough, how about doing it while raising a toddler and from a wheelchair?

Louise Marie Briggs who recently completed her Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice, did just that. At 32, just married and having recently finished five years of intense legal study, she is exuberant and thrilled to finally be admitted as a solicitor to the Supreme Court of NSW. Read more

Alumni off to Buckingham Palace
UTS alumni Michele (Tsalta) Phillips (B. Bus Finance & Economics ’91) will join Prince Philip at Buckingham Palace this month to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Commonwealth Study Conferences.

The aim of the program, founded by Prince Phillip, is to identify people from the Commonwealth with leadership potential and provide them with the opportunity to learn from the experiences of others.

Michele was accepted into the program in 2003 as a result of her teaching and work on the impact of multinationals on communities in developing countries, and the choices managers make between profit expediency and social good-will.

Michele is the Asia Pacific Regional Product Director for Electrolux, having previously held leadership positions with Kimberly-Clark, Nestle, Mars and Procter & Gamble.

Law reform needed to keep sex industry clean
Changes to laws on how brothels are regulated by New South Wales councils could see a rise in crime, corruption and illegally run brothels according to UTS law researcher Penny Crofts.

Speaking at the recent UTSpeaks Public Lecture Ms Crofts said although brothels had been legal in NSW for more than a decade, changes to state legislation could drive many small sex businesses back underground.

Recycled water breakthrough
Over one billion people throughout the world have no safe drinking water and almost two and a half billion people do not have access to adequate sanitation. In order to provide people with water and to ease the strain on dwindling supplies of freshwater, recycled water has been touted as a solution both globally and locally.

An unfortunate side effect of treating used water is the sludge and chemical waste that remains. But the PhD research of post doctorate fellow Dr Hokyong Shon, of the Faculty of Engineering, presents a world-first solution to this problem.

UTS EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES

Sydney Futures Twilight Symposia
Sydney is a global metropolis sliding into chaos. A beautiful city with a declining infrastructure, a city once characterised by its concerns for social justice, it is now harder to live in, unhealthier, more dangerous, more expensive, and far less equitable than its potential holds.

In a desire to stimulate debate among citizens about the future of our city and its region, the University of Technology, Sydney is sponsoring six twilight symposia focusing on critical issues in the city's future.

July's symposium, Keeping the local in the global city: LEPs, debates whether the state government will use its new powers to remove the local from the city and examines how to ensure communities are viable and supportive environments. Will new directions mean more "cookie-cutter" suburbs?

Panel: Genia McCaffrey, Alison Ziller

Date: 6 July, 2006, 4pm to 7pm
Location: City - Broadway, CB04. Level 2 (entrance on Harris Street), Room 38
Price: $22 per event, series of six $110

UTSpeaks Public Lecture – 15 June 6pm
Education has been one of the slowest sectors to embrace the promise of online technology's rapid advance. Can these new technologies assist learning, and if so, how might resistance to e-learning be overcome?

Using a virtual excursion into two digital worlds, one created by students, another by teachers, this free public lecture explores the possibility that confusion about how we learn impedes the uptake of new technologies in Education. Join us to provoke your thinking about what it means to learn. Refresh your ideas about curriculum, assessment, teaching and teacher and parent education.

Speaker: Associate Professor Lyn Schaverien
