ALUMNI NEWS

UTS Films Shine at the Sydney Film Festival

UTS alumni have made their mark on this year's Sydney Film Festival.

Master of Animation graduate, Lucinda Schreiber, is a finalist for the Yoram Gross Animation Award in the 2007 Sydney Film Festival. Lucinda directed and produced The Goat That Ate Time - a story about a goat who realises that time is dangerously delicious, as her final Masters project in 2006.

Masters of Media Arts and Production alumnus Ben Phelps directed Checkpoint, about a family who find themselves under siege during a holiday road trip in NSW. Ben's film has been nominated as a finalist for both the Fiction and Multiculturalism CRC Awards.

And UTS Documentary Production lecturer, Belinda Mason, is also a finalist for the CRC Award for her film, Growing up and Going Home, a film about three Ethiopian teenagers, adopted by an extended Australian family as children, returning to Ethiopia to reconnect with the family, friends and culture they left behind.

The Dendy Awards is the premier competition for short films Australia wide.

Congratulations and good luck to Lucinda, Ben and Belinda!

Students Discover the Fun Side of Science at UTS

In connection with the Nobel Exhibition theme Beautiful Minds, and driven by the desire to build a closer relationship with the top UTS Science feeder schools, the Science Faculty recently ran two well-received "Creative Science" programs for specially targeted schools.

Six teams of talented science students from years 8, 9 and 10 battled it out in "Shipwrecked! The Creative Science Challenge", where each group attempted three tasks associated with life on a desert island. The creative thinking tasks included think-tanks on locating fresh water sources; finger-print identification; cracking an electronic code; navigating treasure maps; and constructing a working compass and telescope in order to escape their island prison!

After the success of the junior secondary school years, "Pursuing Creative Science", a careers program for students from years 10, 11 and 12 was held. Nic Svenson, Australia's own Ig Nobel Prize winner for her research into blinking in group photos, delivered an eccentric, crowd-pleasing presentation on the Ig Nobels and creativity in science. Discussions were held about career trajectories in science, and students were urged to consider a science degree as an excellent preparation for all kinds of careers.

Congratulations and thanks to all those who helped make both programs such a success.
