Supporting UTS scholarships

In the coming weeks, UTS alumni will be invited in a letter from the Vice Chancellor, Prof Ross Milbourne to help support scholarships for disadvantaged students. Donations to UTS for this purpose are tax deductible.

Increasingly there are students who, despite their ability are not able to commence at UTS or to complete a course due to financial hardship. Sadly, the number of students like this is increasing.

Staff at UTS are also being asked to make a regular donation to the scholarship fund.

UTS Union canyoning day trip

Tigersnake is an ideal winter canyon. Along the way 3 easy abseils up to 17m in height are encountered as well as a spectacular narrow dark section. It contains several shallow pools and small waterfalls which are negotiated by climbing or abseiling. If you're careful you shouldn't get wet much past your knees. However if you slip over you'll get soaked!

From the car-park a 45 minute walk will get us to the start of the canyon where we will put on our abseiling gear. The canyon itself should take about 3 hours time to traverse. Near the bottom end we will have lunch in a spectacular cave. We will also have a look around the back of the cave in search of some glow-worms if time permits. From here a 1.5 hour walk will have us back at the cars. The track out is fairly steep to start with (some scrambling) but offers fantastic views and rock formations along the way.

Date: Sunday 21 May 2006
Venue: Wollemi National Park
Time:7.00am to 9.00pm
Cost: $50 students, staff & alumni, $60 others
Bookings: Contact the Recreation Officer:

The graphic scene: the work of UTS graduate Glen Sharah

Passing the likes of Tom Cruise, Val Kilmer and Peter Jackson in the corridor, and bumping into a hobbit or two, has all been part of a day's work for Bachelor of Computing Science graduate Glen Sharah. The Lighting Technical Director - who most recently worked on the film XMEN: The Last Stand (out this month) - is able to "make the same object look like glass, or metal, or skin."

Sharah has been working as Lighting Technical Director for Weta Digital in New Zealand for the past two years, and for three years before that as a systems administrator. His current job involves code writing which he says takes 10 per cent of his time, while 90 per cent of his time is spent tweaking to achieve the desired look.

The principle aim of this intensive program is to provide an overview of the critical concepts in successful turnaround management.

Top health economist calls for caution in healthcare reform

In a recent UTSpeaks public lecture UTS health economics expert Professor Jane Hall questioned whether Australians were getting good value for money for the 9.7% of GDP spent on health each year.

Professor Hall, Director of the UTS Centre for Health Economics Research and Evaluation (CHERE), addressed more than 170 health sector stakeholders including the Deputy Secretary for the Federal Department of Ageing and Health, Philip Davies.

Professor Hall told guests that healthcare spending currently accounted for $78.4 billion per annum. "Much of this comes from government, but Australians also pay $16 billion per annum or $800 per person in direct out-of-pocket health costs, which is high compared to other OECD countries," Professor Hall said.

Who stole my revolution? Feminism and the rise of individualism

By Eva Cox, OAM, Senior Lecturer, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences

"Why is seventies feminism being blamed by a bizarre spread of critics for some of the less attractive aspects of present society? My belief is that we must continue to be some form of threat so the ideas still have power. As part of the movement in the seventies, I find it odd that it is not just the usual conservatives blaming us for undermining families but some unexpected radicals. "

IDEAS IN ACTION: 2006 social inquiry public seminar series

"Coming to our senses with sensational ideas"

Have the twentieth-century 'turns' in theorising, with their [by turn, though not necessarily in turn] linguistic, phenomenological, semiotic, structuralist, deconstructionist, culturalist, and variously postmodernist flavours - though they are actually all ever-more linguistically flavoured turns - in effect rendered our idea-making incapable of being, in Marx's phrase, 'adequate to the real'?

Has a 'sensory revolution' in social-cultural theory occurred? Or is it just that a small minority of 'sensual theorists' have deceived themselves into thinking we* - *Western theorists at large - are finally coming to appreciate the impact of experiencing a full five-sense sensorium? Should, even, a sensory revolution in social and cultural inquiry take place? Is one really needed?
