Bike in a backpack

Industrial Design graduate Frag Woodall has won third place in the 12th international bicycle design competition held in Taiwan with his bicycle 'Everglide' that can be folded up and carried in a backpack (pictured above).
The new design is aimed at providing its user a form of transport that can be ported easily onto trains and buses. "With a bike that can either be ridden or carried with you, you're never going to be stranded somewhere waiting for the next train," said Frag.
No stranger to the spotlight, Frag was a finalist for the prestigious Bombay Sapphire Design Discovery Award in 2006, came third in the Design Institute of Australia 2005 Australasian Student Design Competition and won the 2005 Cormack Packaging competition with a clever redesign of the closure system for a sports water bottle. This last feat has since grabbed the attention of Coca-Cola.
"An element of my design style is the notion of evoking people's curiosity and causing them to take a second look. I like design to be playful, random or unexpected," said Frag. "To me, it is very important in design that things are both witty and whimsical."
Frag is currently working on the design team at Woodmark.
Shadows of Africa

Writer and musical director Miriam Lieberman is touring Australia with her powerful puppetry and musical show, The Mermaid's Daughter.
Miriam, who graduated from the Bachelor of Arts in Communication and International Studies in 2002, has enhanced her studies with travels throughout Latin America, South East Asia and West Africa. While abroad, she gained experience in traditional folk music and dance, as well as sourcing inspiration for her writing.
"The story was inspired by my experiences living in shanty towns while studying traditional music in West Africa," she said. "There is a magical dimension of African reality that is very, very real there. This was the inspiration for The Mermaid's Daughter."
The Mermaid's Daughter premiered at the "One Van" International Puppet Festival in the Blue Mountains, NSW, and was shortlisted for the 2008 Adelaide Fringe Festival Puppetry Award. The show is currently touring in Western Australia.

UTSpeaks: Weigh Too Fat
Aside from media panic, how will we find solutions to Australia's growing obesity? Reports from health experts have fuelled the media, policy makers and politicians to paint obesity as an epidemic, the most important health issue facing Australia and a crisis for health care services. This public lecture on Thursday 22 May explores the complexities leading to overweight and obesity in the community, offering insights on the combination of strategies that could be considered for its treatment and possible new pathways for essential research.

Volunteering in the outback

Master of Administration graduate Gael Walker (pictured above left) has a long-standing involvement in community development. The most recent volunteer project she undertook was in the remote Aboriginal community of Kalumburu.
Kalumburu is in the far north of the Kimberley in Western Australia and is accessible by one of the toughest roads in the country. "It took me some time to adjust to the pace of day to day life in Kalumburu," she said. "I slowly learnt to do a lot of sitting and yarning."
Attention that the tiny town has received from the media has focused on issues of drug addiction and abuse. To combat the negative reportage, Walker established Kalumburu News so that the community could publicise its positive stories.
"The idea of volunteering," says Gael, who is currently Acting Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, "is not to do things for a community but to skill-share so that the community can do these things on its own."
Gael is keen to encourage other potential volunteers to work with Indigenous Community Volunteers or with Australian Business Volunteers. For more information on volunteering, visit: www.icv.com.au

About Un Secret
This is a splendid and moving saga of a Jewish family in post-war Paris, told through the eyes of a frail and intelligent young boy who senses something is amiss with his beautiful parents (Cécile De France and Patrick Bruel).
On his 15th birthday, a family friend tells him a shattering truth that may enable him to develop his own sense of self.
This wholly absorbing tale is a superbly drawn study of human behaviour, featuring excellent supporting performances by Julie Depardieu, Ludivine Sagnier, Mathieu Amalric and Yves Jacques.
