Alumni End of Year Celebration: Bollywood comes to UTS!



When: Thursday 24th November, 6.30pm
Where: Level 3, The Chancellery, Tower Building, UTS Broadway Campus

This year's Alumni End of Year Celebration has a Bollywood theme featuring tabla players and Bollywood dancers, plus yummy Indian finger food.

Complementary wine and beer will be served.

The End of Year Celebration is a great opportunity to mingle with old and new faces, including fellow alum, UTS executives and staff. Tickets are only $20 and are available from the Alumni Office on (02) 9514 8036 or by downloading the invite and faxing it back to us on (02) 9514 8033.

New cancer drug company founded on UTS research

A company commercialising a breakthrough treatment for blood cancers developed from UTS research is expected to be floated on the Australian Stock Exchange next month.

PacMab Limited, founded on the work of a research team led by Faculty of Science Professor of Immunology Robert Raison, has lodged a prospectus for a public share issue that will generate investment to complete clinical trails of the technology.

UTS nurtures a new crop of research tall poppies

Two of UTS's young researchers were honoured recently when they were named 2005 NSW Young Tall Poppy Award winners. The Young Tall Poppy awards were established by the Australian Institute of Political science to promote awareness of Australia's intellectual achievements among the Australian public.

Simon Walsh and Dominic Dowling were recognised for their strong research record and for their community service.

A quiet revolution in practical compassion

Strategies that pay attention to simple human needs hold the promise of a quiet revolution in the care of people suffering dementia according to a leading aged care nursing researcher.

Professor Lynn Chenoweth of the UTS Faculty of Nursing, Midwifery and Health heads a team that has just begun a clinical trial of the benefits of patient management founded on careful observation and practical compassion.

UTS tops Hong Kong-Australia Business Association Awards

UTS took the inaugural Grand Prize and a major category prize at the Hong Kong-Australia Business Association [HKABA] NSW Business Awards 2005 which took place recently in Sydney.

Now in their sixth year, the awards recognise NSW individuals and companies who strive for excellence in all aspects of international trade between Australia and Hong Kong.

ABC Women in Engineering Scholarship for UTS student

Software Engineering student Astrid Zeman was recently awarded one of two of this year's ABC Women in Engineering Scholarships.

The Scholarships are awarded nationally each year to women in their final year of study in Electrical Engineering who have an interest in broadcasting, telecommunications or information technology. Recipients receive a cash grant of $1500 and valuable industry experience in the exciting and challenging technology area of the ABC.

UTS is University Sport East Region Overall Champion

UTS was pronounced the Australian University Sport East Region Overall Champion at the recent 2005 Eastern University Sport Awards. This is the first time UTS has achieved such an accolade in the University sporting community.

The award recognises the best performance overall based on the highest points total from various sporting events in the East region throughout the year, including the Eastern University Games.

Release of Report 'Women in Immigration Detention'

UTS's Centre for Trans/forming Cultures has just released a report examining some of the ways in which Immigration Detention Facilities are administered and how the system can cover up abuses of the basic rights and needs of detainees.

UTS Gallery: Strangely Familiar - Fiona Hall and Fiona MacDonald

Between 1 November and 2 December 2005 the UTS Gallery will be exhibiting works by artists Fiona Hall and Fiona MacDonald.

Entitled 'Strangely Familiar', the exhibition 'will turn the gallery into an environment where we see the aftershadows of the collection and the complicated folds of capitalism.'

History of Australian Television Conference

UTS and the Powerhouse Museum are holding a three-day conference exploring the histories of television in Australia. The conference is associated with the Australian Television History Project (UTS) and sets the scene for the forthcoming Powerhouse Museum exhibition on the history of Australian television, marking the 50th anniversary of the beginning of television broadcasting in Australia.

Enjoy a beautiful afternoon of sailing on Sydney Harbour with up to 5 friends and a skipper provided. Impulse is UTS Union’s yacht and it’s there to be used by alumni, students and staff alike.

Spring edition of 'Stay Connected' now on-line

The Spring 2005 edition of the alumni magazine 'Stay Connected' is now available on-line at the Graduate Connections website.

UTS alumni are making their mark in fields as diverse as engineering, nursing, fiction writing, design, film making and law and in this edition we not only hear about their career "journey", but also the people who inspire them, how they cope with stress and their hopes and dreams for the future.

UTS alumni awarded $15,000 by Australia Council for the Arts

Congratulations to UTS alumni Bronwyn Rodden (MA Writing 2001), who was recently awarded an Emerging Writers Grant of $15,000 by the Australia Council for the Arts. The award was given for a project linking her family’s ancestral home in Ireland and her experience of growing up in Australia.

Bronwyn's work has been published alongside Maeve Binchy and Eavan Boland in 'Wee Girls: Women Writing from an Irish Perspective', and alongside Henry Lawson, Banjo Paterson and Ned Kelly in 'The Turning Waves: Poems and Songs of Irish Australia. '

Visual Communication graduate in International Photography Awards

Sydney artist Caroline Nader was awarded an Honourable Mention in the International Photography Awards (IPA) 2005 Competition. Caroline graduated from the Bachelor of Design in Visual Communication in 1995.

The Alumni Office was very sorry to hear that UTS graduate Glyn Eric Morris (B.Bus 1975) died on 16th September 2005 from leukaemia.
