NEW UTS:Alumni website is now live! www.alumni.uts.edu.au
We're very pleased to announce that the new UTS:Alumni website is now live!

We're really excited about the totally revamped and redesigned site, which will soon include a fantastic new interactive area featuring: a business directory where you can advertise your business or professional details, e-communities allowing you to chat and network with fellow alumni and keep in touch with UTS faculties, plus the ability to view and update your details as they appear in our database and join alumni networks.

These features have been developed in response to last year's alumni survey, in which many respondents said they would like to see greater online interactivity for alumni members, in particular the ability to network with fellow graduates online and advertise contact details in an online business directory.

UTS:Alumni looks forward to sending you full details on how to log on and use the interactive member area soon.

Log on now to the new site at: www.alumni.uts.edu.au

In the meantime, if you have any questions about the new website or online member area please contact us

Engineering tomorrow's engineers
Are you an engineering graduate? If so, the Australian Technology Network (ATN) needs your help in an Australia-wide initiative to help universities provide the best engineering education possible. With the nation's current skills shortage in engineering, it is more important than ever that graduates move into the workforce armed with the skills they need to be effective in the field.

The Australian Technology Network (ATN), comprising five of Australia's largest universities of technology in each mainland state, will be conducting a series of short, informal sessions designed for engineering graduates who completed their studies in either 2001 or 2005. Taking place in a relaxed, social environment, the sessions will enable participants to discuss how well their university studies prepared them for a career in engineering. If you have moved out of NSW this is not a problem as sessions will be conducted across the country.

Your help is appreciated in making Australian engineers the best that they can be. If you are interested in participating, please contact the ATN directly: matthew.hee@unisa.edu.au or telephone +61 8 8302 9132.

Offshore Processing of Asylum Seekers: A Conference on Australian Obligations
The 'Pacific Solution' has dramatically reduced the inflow of asylum seekers by sea, however, there are serious national and international concerns as to whether this policy is consistent with international law and principles of social justice. Curbside mouth swabs more curse than cure
Roadside drug testing has more to do with politicians scoring political points than it does about keeping our roads safe an expert in forensic chemistry announced at a recent UTSpeaks public lecture.

UTS Head of Chemistry, Materials and Forensic Science, Associate Professor Michael Dawson, said solutions to problems such as drug abuse and drug driving that were popular with politicians rarely produced the desired results. That is to say, what works isn't popular and what's popular doesn't work.

He said the new laws permitting police to test drivers for the presence of a limited range of high profile recreational drugs did not include many other drugs that can cause much greater driving impairment.

Leading innovation in IT education
Three pioneering projects of the UTS Faculty of Information Technology to enhance the education of the next generation of IT professionals have won the support of Australia's peak organisation for university teaching and learning.

The Carrick Institute for Learning and Teaching in Higher Education has awarded UTS:IT around $600,000 in Priority Project Grants for 2007-2008 to develop innovative, interactive, online learning and assessment environments that will benefit universities around Australia.

The Faculty's Associate Dean (Education), Associate Professor David Wilson, said the successful proposals had targeted three areas of need - high-demand computer scripting skills, improving the assessment of introductory programming subjects and developing students' evaluation, feedback, review and assessment skills.

A point to prove: acupuncture as a treatment for hepatitis C
Ten years ago, working in a Sydney drug and alcohol rehabilitation unit, acupuncturist Christine Berle became convinced that acupuncture treatments were having a positive effect on the health of residents suffering hepatitis C.

Today, as a Master's student in the UTS College of Traditional Chinese Medicine in the Faculty of Science, she is undertaking a scientifically rigorous clinical trial to test what she saw ten years ago.

The trial - the first of its kind in Australia - will evaluate whether acupuncture treatment has an effect on the health outcomes of people who have contracted the hepatitis C virus (HCV). More than 240,000 people in Australia are estimated to be infected by HCV and there are about 16,000 new infections per year.

UTSpeaks lecture: Am I a real boy? Will robots and computers one day ask such questions?
The ongoing quest for artificial intelligence is this year celebrating its 50th year. But what might the next 50 years hold in store for us? Could robots one day be smarter than people? Could robots and computers learn the way babies do? Could they develop a sense of humour or learn to deceive their makers?

This free public lecture will explore the shape of things to come for computers and robots in a future when we may come to rely on truly intelligent technology.

About the presenter
Professor Mary-Anne Williams is a world leader in artificial intelligence research. She has developed several new computational models for decision making in complex and dynamic environments, with applications from financial risk management to autonomous robot soccer players. She is a member of the Australian Research Council's College of Experts, the Editorial Board of the Journal of Artificial Intelligence Research and the joint MIT Press and American Artificial Intelligence Association Press. Professor Williams is Team Leader of the UTS robot soccer team UTS Unleashed!, which has enjoyed significant international success.
