Released on the anniversary of the attacks, a monograph from the report has been prepared by the University of Technology, Sydney Shopfront program for the Community Relations Commission For a multicultural NSW (CRC). It offers vital insight into the likely impact of more recent events such as the Bali and London bombings on acts of racial vilification within the community. Read the full story Research tackles the physical demands of Rugby League Despite Rugby League's high profile few scientific studies have been conducted on the movement patterns and workload of professional players - and no recent studies have been conducted to reflect changes in game rules - until now.UTS PhD student and long time Rugby League fan Anita Sirotic is completing a series of studies aimed at designing position-specific training programs and more effective testing procedures for players. Using the Parramatta Eels as a case study, she has been comparing the movement patterns and physical demands required of specific positions in first and second grade Rugby League. Read the full story R&D investment and unity needed to beat drug-proof super bugs Professor Michael Wallach, Director of the UTS Institute for the Biotechnology of Infectious Diseases has warned that antibiotic resistant microbes will thrive in Australia unless the public, academic and private sectors cooperate in the discovery of new methods of disease control. Professor Wallach said inappropriate use of drugs in rearing livestock and treating people was contributing to the rise of 'super-bugs'. Speaking at a recent UTSpeaks public lecture to fellow scientists and representatives of government and industry, he said a critical point had been reached in the use of traditional antibiotics and that new disease controls in livestock, such as vaccination, had to be properly researched and implemented. Read the full story New short courses in play ground safety The Faculty of Engineering is offering new short courses in play ground safety in conjunction with the Royal Society for Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) and the Australian Playground Safety Institute (APSI). UTS:Engineering also offer regular short courses on playground safety, design, maintenance and inspection both on campus and at client venues around Australia and New Zealand. Courses can be tailored to clients' individual needs. UTS placed 6th on the Doug Ellis Trophy tally which is based on results adjusted according to university populations. Fifteen UTS students also made the AUG ‘Green and Gold’ team that rewards outstanding performances at the Games. UTS students carried off the Gold in Athletics, Silver in the Mens’ Soccer, a Silver and Bronze in the Swimming, and a Bronze in Womens’ Tennis. The University of Melbourne took out the number one spot overall with the University of Sydney and the University of Queensland placing second and third respectively.
