Coming soon - NEW UTS:Alumni website with enhanced interactivity!

We're very pleased to announce that the new UTS:Alumni website will be launched later this month!

We're really excited about the totally revamped and redesigned site, which will include a fantastic new interactive area featuring: a business directory where you can advertise your business or professional details, e-communities allowing you to chat and network with fellow alumni, plus the ability to view and update your details as they appear in our database and join alumni networks.

These features have been developed in response to last year's alumni survey, in which many of you said you would like to see greater online interactivity for alumni members, in particular the ability to network with fellow graduates online and advertise your details in an online business directory.

We hope you are as excited about these new features as we are, and look forward to sending you full details on how to log on and use the interactive member area once the new website is launched later this month.
Watch this space!!!

In the meantime, if you have any questions about the new website or online member area please contact us

UTS:Alumni in Thailand
The UTS Alumni Reception, Thailand was held on Saturday 24 June 2006 at the Landmark Hotel, Bangkok. With bad weather delaying proceedings and keeping many guests away, the 100 strong crowd nonetheless enjoyed the plentiful food and beverages and were able to mix with old friends, fellow alumni and UTS academic staff.

Speeches were given by: Ms Watinee Kharnwong, Deputy Director of Australian Education International, Australian Embassy; Professor Tom Anderson, Associate Dean (International and Enterprise Development), Faculty of Engineering, with Emeritus Professor Tony Moon directing proceedings. Engineering tomorrow's engineers
Are you an engineering graduate? If so, the Australian Technology Network (ATN) needs your help in an Australia-wide initiative to help universities provide the best engineering education possible. With the nation's current skills shortage in engineering, it is more important than ever that graduates move into the workforce armed with the skills they need to be effective in the field.

The Australian Technology Network (ATN), comprising five of Australia's largest universities of technology in each mainland state, will be conducting a series of short, informal sessions designed for engineering graduates who completed their studies in either 2001 or 2005. Taking place in a relaxed, social environment, the sessions will enable participants to discuss how well their university studies prepared them for a career in engineering. If you have moved out of NSW this is not a problem as sessions will be conducted across the country.

Your help is appreciated in making Australian engineers the best that they can be. If you are interested in participating, please contact the ATN directly: matthew.hee@unisa.edu.au or telephone +61 8 8302 9132.

Muslim women can do without the "new feminists"
As Prime Minister John Howard again urges Muslim migrants to embrace "Australian values" and "treat women as equals", a UTS academic working with Muslim women in Sydney has challenged the motives for such public statements about the rights of women.

In a recent UTSpeaks public lecture, Cronulla, conflict and culture: How can Muslim women be heard in Australia?, Dr Christina Ho argued that the phenomenon of conservative male public figures seemingly becoming feminists has little to do with any real concern for Muslim women.

Seminar: word and image in contemporary fiction
The use of graphic elements - photographs, illustrations and diagrams - in contemporary fiction has increased significantly in recent years. This phenomenon is evident in works by Umberto Eco and Douglas Copeland, and emerging authors, such as Jonathan Safran Foer.

Rather than simply illustrating the written text, many of these books use graphic elements as a literary device to consciously interrupt, or disturb, the written text. This free seminar by Zoë Sadokierski will suggest potentials for writers working with word and image in fiction and explore some of the breakthroughs using text and image in contemporary fiction.

When: Wednesday 18 October, 1-2 pm
Where: UTS Building 2, Level 7, Room 2.7065, Broadway
