Farwell to the School of Architecture's Kerryn Stanton
After five years supporting the School of Architecture, Kerryn Stanton is leaving UTS. Kerryn extends her best wishes to the architecture alumni from 2002 onwards. She says, "They adapted to huge changes in their courses and were very appreciative of the unique chaos we all had to deal with, making sense of it and saving people falling though the cracks! I wish them all the best as architects and in all walks of life, and I am proud to have played a tiny part in their careers."
Kerryn says it was the students who made her time at UTS so memorable and worthwhile.

Is online media killing journalism? Wednesday 17 October, 6pm
GUEST SPEAKER: Liz Jackson of Four Corners.

Venue: UTS, Broadway Campus,

UTSpeaks October Series
Mentally Distressed: Thursday 11 October
Australia is gripped by a nursing shortage, but in the face of an ageing population and increasingly stressful modern world, our need for well-educated and seasoned mental health nurses is equally urgent.
Coinciding with Mental Health Week, this public lecture reveals the unique role played by mental health nurses in Australia's health care system, the essential qualities needed to care for people with complex, new and extreme forms of mental illness and the challenges ahead for mental health nursing, education and research.
Kevin Kellehear
An expert in mental health and general nursing, psychology and nursing education, Kevin Kellehear has keenly observed and actively contributed to important changes in mental health and nursing for more than 40 years. He is a Foundation Adviser to the National Consortium for Multicultural Mental Health Australia and the current Deputy Chair of the Mental Health Services Conference of Australia and New Zealand.

Financial Sector Dysfunctionality: Wednesday 31 October
Received wisdom holds that competitive markets are lean and efficient markets. How then can we explain the bloated scale and profits of the banks and financial institutions globally, the periodic share price bubbles and resulting misallocation of capital, and the regular systemic blow-ups, such as the current sub-prime lending debacle? Can it be that Adam Smith's dictum that the pursuit of private gain leads to the highest utility for all, does not, after all, apply in financial markets?
Paul Woolley
Dr Paul Woolley's career has spanned the private sector, academia and policy-oriented institutions. He gained his BA and D Phil in Economics from the University of York (UK) and was a lecturer there in the early 1970's. For the past twenty years he has run the European arm of GMO, the global fund management business based in Boston, US.

Peter Clary Castrission, BA Communication (MAP) and LLB, 2007
Clary is a recent combined Communication/Law graduate with a burning desire to make the world a better place. At 24, Clary is President of the 40K Home Foundation, a non-profit, Sydney-based organisation fighting poverty on a global scale. 40K's mission is to raise sums of $40,000 to build new orphanages in Asia and the Pacific. Providing basic housing necessities allows children to pursue more important things in life, such as education.
Clary says, "The emphasis is on development and empowerment, rather than charity. We agree with a wise Indian man who told us that charity is expensive and tends to create dependency; it is a necessary short-term solution in many situations, but provides few long-term developmental benefits. People must be rehabilitated and provided with the necessary skills so they are independent of charity and empowered."
International law and human rights is Clary's passion and has become the springboard for his career. Clary says, "Human rights law encourages a rational approach to a widely compassionate area, forcing people to think about how to solve problems with influential reason, rather than pure heart." Clary has spent his last summer in India as a selected intern in the South Asia Human Rights Documentation Centre, researching current issues in international human rights.
The 40K Home Foundation is holding a charity ball. With proceeds going directly to completing the current Bangalore project, this year's ball will be big!
Date: Saturday 13 October, 7pm
Venue: Avondale Golf Club, Avon Road Pymble
Dress: Cocktail
Tickets: $110 (students)/$130 (adults) and include a three-course meal and beverages.
