Engineering tomorrow's engineers
Are you an engineering graduate? If so, the Australian Technology Network (ATN) needs your help in an Australia-wide initiative to help universities provide the best engineering education possible. With the nation's current skills shortage in engineering, it is more important than ever that graduates move into the workforce armed with the skills they need to be effective in the field.
The Australian Technology Network (ATN), comprising five of Australia's largest universities of technology in each mainland state, will be conducting a series of short, informal sessions designed for engineering graduates who completed their studies in either 2001 or 2005. Taking place in a relaxed, social environment, the sessions will enable participants to discuss how well their university studies prepared them for a career in engineering. If you have moved out of NSW this is not a problem as sessions will be conducted across the country.
Your help is appreciated in making Australian engineers the best that they can be. If you are interested in participating, please contact the ATN directly: matthew.hee@unisa.edu.au or telephone +61 8 8302 9132.
ALUMNI NEWS
The write act:
What do a waitress who slept in a vacuum-cleaner cupboard, a girl who woke up on the floor of a hotel room after a disastrous premiere, and an out of work actor have in common? They are all the topics of short stories written by Sophie Lee for the UTS Graduate Certificate in Writing.
While the film, television and theatre actor is best known for her roles in Muriel's Wedding and The Castle, and most recently Blackjack on Channel 10, writing has always been on her radar. "From a young age I kept journals and thought about a career in writing instead of acting." And the actor's writing career is set to take off having signed a book deal with publisher Random House.

"Set your goals beyond what you think you can achieve." This is the advice of Bachelor of Information Technology graduate Zubin Appoo. The 25-year-old did just that and now, five years out of university, he is senior product manager, and part owner of innovative IT company Eagle Datamation International (EDI).
"At UTS I didn't just learn about IT, I also learnt communication skills, management skills and how to be an effective leader. My current position is half technical, half management and this is just the way I like it: a good manager has development and business skills."

UTS NEWS AND INITIATIVES
A step back in time
This month marks the fortieth anniversary of one of the most courageous political actions of the twentieth century – the Gurindji Strike. The strikers had been employed on Wave Hill Station in the Northern Territory by the British consortium, Vesteys.
Like other Aboriginal workers of their era the Gurindji people were denied the protection of award wages. Tired of appalling work conditions, the Gurindji people, under the leadership of the formidable Vincent Lingiari, declared a strike on 23 August 1966. It evolved into a decade long battle for the repatriation of their traditional lands and captured the imagination of thousands of Australians. The Gurindji people's eventual victory would later be immortalised by the image of Gough Whitlam pouring dirt into Vincent Lingiari's hands.

What is it about shoes that compels us to traverse the length and breadth of the city seeking the shoes that give us the comfort we crave or transport us in a style beyond our wildest dreams? How much time do you spend thinking about shoes? Little?Think again.
A fascination for the history of the shoe led UTS professor of design history Peter McNeil, and economic historian Dr Giorgio Riello from the London School of Economics, to research and coedit the first global history of the shoe. Shoes: A History from Sandals to Sneakers, published by Berg Publications in Oxford and New York, will be launched in Sydney and other major capital cities around the world this month.

UTSpeaks lecture: calling them to account
How can we demand higher standards from our failing news media? How much can we trust what we see, hear or read in Australia? Daily we are bombarded with sensational news reports, editorial commentary and highly edited imagery that we are told is an accurate and truthful portrayal of events. But who is watching the self-styled media watch dogs and what forces are at work that determine what is presented as the truth?
Presented by Peter Manning, his free public lecture examines how far the news and current affairs industry has come in shaping our attitudes, fuelling our fears and guiding our politics. It will also question the future of our traditional news media in an age of alternative new media, a shrinking world and growing conflict.
Peter Manning
Peter Manning joined UTS in 2001 as an adjunct professor after a distinguished 30-year career in Australian journalism. He has been Seven Television Network head of current affairs, head of ABC Radio National and head of ABC Television News and Current Affairs. During the 1980s Peter was executive producer of ABC Four Corners. In 2004 he became a senior lecturer in journalism in the UTS Faculty of Humanities and Social Science. He has just published his latest book Us and Them which reveals the negative and unbalanced portrayal of Arabs by Australian news media.

Sydney Futures Twilight Symposia
Sydney is a global metropolis sliding into chaos. A beautiful city with a declining infrastructure, a city once characterised by its concerns for social justice, it is now harder to live in, unhealthier, more dangerous, more expensive, and far less equitable than its potential holds.
In a desire to stimulate debate among citizens about the future of our city and its region, the University of Technology, Sydney is sponsoring six twilight symposia focusing on critical issues in the city's future.
September's symposium: Opportunity and Outcome: Different Prospects, features pannelists Andrew Jakubowicz (UTS), Heidi Norman (Jumbunna UTS) , Robert Welsh (TBC) Metropolitan Local Aboriginal lands Council, and Michelle Burrell (NCOSS).
One test of this urban civilisation is the extent of the opportunity it provides for everyone to live fulfilling lives. What has happened to social justice in the city, and how can it be reinstated as a planning goal? With the State Plan recently released with little reference to the state's cultural minorities, and Metrostrategy bypassing many of the city's more disadvantaged communities, this symposium will examine key issues for the city's future. These include the future of indigenous communities, ethnic communities and the poor.
When: Thursday 28 September 2006, 4pm to 7pm
Where: UTS City Campus, Science Building CB04 (entrance Harris St), Level 2, Room 38 (CB04.02.38)
Cost: free

Ideas in Action seminar: from the 'quiet revolution' to 'crisis' in Australian indigenous affairs
What is going on Indigenous affairs in this country? In recent months members of the federal political leadership including the Minister for Family and Community Services and Indigenous Affairs, Mal Brough, have been talking about a widespread 'crisis' in Aboriginal communities across the country - a crisis brought about by the 'violence,' 'dysfunction,' 'substance abuse', 'poverty', 'unemployment', and critically poor health of these communities - a crisis which for the most part lies with Indigenous 'failure' and for which indigenous people themselves must take 'responsibility'.
That the federal political leadership is not alone in making this assessment appears to complicate matters: indigenous commentators and non-indigenous commentators, some who are sympathetic to the Government, and others who are not, some who have long experience with indigenous communities, and others who have only superficial engagement, all decry the critical circumstances of daily life in remote Aboriginal communities and make explicit the role of indigenous agency and responsibility in this 'crisis'. And yet, only a year ago, the then Minster for Indigenous Affairs, Amanda Vanstone, had reflected on the Federal Coalition's achievements in indigenous affairs over its nine year term and described the government's record combined with iIndigenous initiative as a 'quiet revolution'.
How then, did we get from the 'quiet revolution' of achievement in 2005 to this 'crisis' in 2006? Is there really a crisis taking place across the country, particularly, as has been suggested, in remote Aboriginal communities? And if there is, what would constitute a meaningful response to this 'crisis'? This seminar seeks to address these and related questions concerning current policy and administration in Indigenous affairs.
