The Jammed - UTS Preview Screening
It was fantastic to see so many alumni among the 300 guests who packed Guthrie Theatre on Tuesday 28 August to watch the acclaimed, harrowing new Australian movie, The Jammed, in support of the UTS Anti-Slavery project.
The gala screening included a Q&A with the stars of the film and raised over $5000 for the UTS Anti-Slavery Project while heightening awareness of the terrifying reality of human trafficking.
If you didn't make it to the screening, keep an eye out for the film at a cinema near you: www.thejammed.com
Accolade for HSS alumni
Media Arts and Production graduate Jane Forrest's film, The Final Winter, brings to three the feature films produced or directed by UTS alumni this season.
Along with Home Song Stories, produced by Liz Watts, and West, produced by Matt Reeder, The Final Winter has been applauded by reviewers and the Australian public.About The Final Winter
As the winds of change sweep across the rugby league landscape, Grub Henderson (Matt Nable) defiantly stands among all others as the embodiment of those before him. Foreign codes of business are tearing at the fabric of loyalty that exists between Grub's club and family. He collides head-on with an administration eager to bury him, and battles against his brother and coach's betrayal. At home his wife is troubled by the transformation of the man she married, and his children are left wanting for their father.
In a bid to cling to his self-worth, Grub bitterly swallows his pride and bargains for his future. As the game that provides him an identity crumbles, he finds acceptance in the man he could be.

What obstructs justice for the wrongfully convicted?
6pm, THURSDAY 13 September
Some prisoners continue to protest their innocence long after they have been found guilty, but how easy is it to reverse a true miscarriage of justice? To what extent do the law, politicians and the media block the re-examination of closed cases? Using several high-profile examples, this free public lecture examines the difficulties faced in unearthing the truth and what happens when the system fails.

Jim White
ME Adult Education, 1996
UTS alumnus, Jim White, was born in America's rural heartland to a middle-class family in a small town in the state of Iowa. After finishing his undergraduate studies locally, Jim's life-path quickly took on an international dimension while he worked for Blockbuster Video in Europe and, ultimately, Australia.
Jim strongly believes that knowledge gained through education is the key to understanding and solving issues in today's world. This quest for knowledge led him to complete a Master's Degree in the Adult Education Program at UTS, and greatly advanced his career in human resources management with leading international companies like Universal Music, Napster and Paramount Pictures, where he currently holds the position of Vice-President of Human Resources.
While working and travelling around the world, Jim captured his thoughts and experiences in journals. These journals served as the springboard for his newly published book, The World is a Safe Place. In this book, Jim brings us to a new level of consciousness in determining how our thoughts create our realities-personally and on a societal level. Jim White has chosen to live his life believing in 'positive possibilities' and beckons us all to do the same!
Please keep us updated with your career news, or any achievements and awards you may have received. We are preparing our next e:Connect and would love to hear from you.

Two inmates are in protective custody on Rickers Island. One is a serial killer who awaits extradition for execution, the other awaits trial for a crime he believes wasn't a crime. It's about faith, morality and the essential nature of what it is to be human.

WIN a Dendy Film Double Pass to Away From Her

UTS:Alumni has eight preview double passes to the poetic film, Away From Her, to give away.
Away From Her is the lyrical screenplay adaptation of celebrated author Alice Munro's short story "The Bear Came Over the Mountain". The film is a beautifully moving love story that deals with memory and the circuitous, un-namable paths of a long marriage.
Married for 50 years, Grant's (Gordon Pinsent) and Fiona's (Julie Christie) commitment to each other appears unwavering, and their everyday life is full of tenderness and humour. This serenity is broken only by the occasional, carefully restrained reference to the past, giving a sense that this marriage may not always have been such a fairy tale. This tendency of Fiona's to make such references, along with her increasingly evident memory loss, creates a tension that is usually brushed off casually by both of them. As the lapses become more obvious and dramatic, it is no longer possible for either of them to ignore the fact that Fiona is suffering from Alzheimer's disease.
To WIN one of the eight preview passes, all you have to do is be one of the first of eight to email alumni@uts.edu.au
