Win an iPod nano, and Dendy cinema passes!

Got a spare 5 minutes or so? Then why not tell us what you think about UTS alumni services in our 2005 survey?

You could be eligible to win an iPod nano, and Dendy cinema passes!

To be eligible for the Dendy Cinema passes
The first 20 people to complete the survey by Tuesday 6 December will win a double pass to the new George Clooney film GOODNIGHT, AND GOOD LUCK at the Newtown Dendy Cinema in Sydney.

Passes will be posted to your home address, and are valid for the 9, 10 and 11 December 2005 only (excluding screenings after 5pm on Saturday 10 December). You will also be eligible for the Nano IPod prize draw.

To be eligible for the iPod nano
Complete the survey by Friday 16 December 2005 to go in the draw for the iPod nano (worth $350). The winner will be notified by email or telephone.

Sydney Harbour gets its own research centre

UTS and two other leading Sydney universities have joined forces to create the first research centre to focus on one of the world's richest marine environments, Sydney Harbour.

The new Sydney Harbour Institute of Marine Sciences (SHIMS), officially launched on Tuesday 22 November, is a collaborative venture with Macquarie University and the University of New South Wales.

Inaugural Alumni Leadership Award

Congratulations to UTS alumni Colin Grady, who was awarded the Inaugural UTS Alumni Leadership Award at the recent Alumni End of Year Celebration.

Presenting the award, the Vice-Chancellor said, "This new award has been introduced as a way of honouring graduates of UTS who have made a special contribution to the University."

Desalination: is it worth its salt?

When: Sunday 4 December, 2.00pm
Where: Powerhouse Museum, Sydney
Cost: Free with Museum entry

With the construction of our own desalination plant imminent, this is the debate Sydneysiders need to have! Will this solution to a changing climate simply make for a drier future, or is it the answer to Sydney's water crisis?

Join Steve Baxter from Sydney Water; Roya Sheikholeslami, Australasian Desalination Association; Greg Leslie, UNSW; Janice Lim and Ros Stein, University of Sydney; and Cr Kelly Knowles, Sutherland Shire, for a provocative and entertaining debate.

A four-way collision of brilliant student design

The University of Technology, Sydney's boundary-crossing graduate design exhibition – the only exhibition of its kind in Australia – will focus both industry and public attention on the University's City campus from Tuesday 6 December.

As a UTS alumni member you are entitled to student rates at the newly renovated UTS fitness centre. Visit the centre on Harris Street for a work out on the new equipment, or join one of the many fitness classes including aerobics, yoga, circuit training and kick boxing.

History of Australian Television Conference

UTS and the Powerhouse Museum are holding a three-day conference exploring the histories of television in Australia. The conference is associated with the Australian Television History Project (UTS) and sets the scene for the forthcoming Powerhouse Museum exhibition on the history of Australian television, marking the 50th anniversary of the beginning of television broadcasting in Australia.

Harbour sailing for $30

Enjoy a beautiful afternoon of sailing on Sydney Harbour with up to 5 friends and a skipper provided. Impulse is UTS Union’s yacht and it’s there to be used by alumni, students and staff alike.

When: Friday and Sunday afternoons (all year round except for public holidays)
Time:1 to 4pm
Venue: Double Bay Sailing Club
Cost: $30 students, staff & alumni, $40 others (includes 3 hour sail & skipper)

UTS alumni Andrew Cashin joins Justice Health

UTS alumni Andrew Cashin (PhD Nursing 2004) has been appointed Associate Professor of Nursing in Jstice Health by UTS in partnership with the NSW statutory health corporation Justice Health.

Professor Cashin will contribute to the ongoing development of health services provided to individuals who find themselves within the NSW criminal justice system and increase awareness of this area as a career pathway for nurses.

The Spring 2005 edition of the alumni magazine 'Stay Connected' is now available on-line at the Graduate Connections website.

UTS alumni are making their mark in fields as diverse as engineering, nursing, fiction writing, design, film making and law and in this edition we not only hear about their career "journey", but also the people who inspire them, how they cope with stress and their hopes and dreams for the future.
