Writers' Network Update February 2008

UTS ALUMNI WRITERS' NETWORK E-ZINE

FEBRUARY 2008

"Poetry is the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings; it takes its origin from emotion recollected in tranquillity." Wordsworth.

Happy New Year to you all, I hope 2008 is off to a good start for you.

This first E-zine for 2008 brings an announcement of the PRIME MINISTER'S LITERARY PRIZES as well as plenty of other opportunities for entering competitions and publishing your work. Don't forget to note the deadlines in your diary.

We have 9 free double passes to Dendy Films to see THE KING OF KONG, scroll down to see how to win your free double-pass.

Susanne Gervay tells us about her book for the Australian National Museum's collection of Books - Making Tracks in NEWS FROM OUR NETWORK. There is more information about the Australian National Museum's collection under OPPORTUNITIES.

Network member, Joanna, is proposing a writing group to meet in the Paddington/Woollahra area, more under NEWS FROM OUR NETWORK.

As always, in this issue there are lots of new items, including a new section WRITERS ON WRITING. So make sure you scroll right down to the end so that you don't miss any of the latest news.

As mentioned in last issue, the most popular type of event favoured in our survey was: workshop with authors/and or writing tutors; followed by Lunch social meeting and readings. So I'm putting together a draft social program to the alumni office for 2008 and welcome your ideas.

I need your help with our monthly E-zine. If you attend a literary event, please send us your impressions. If you'd like to contribute a short article about writing or a topic related to writing, we'd love it. If you have a poem or short story you'd like to share, please do. Please remember, though, that some competition guidelines stipulate that online publication will disqualify entries. If you offered to proofread our e-zine can you please email me to let me know? You can contact me at: Sharon.P.Rundle@alumni.uts.edu.au

We're always interested in hearing from you, our network members, about how we can improve the network to better cater for your needs and interests. You can fill out the survey posted in our Writers' Network E-community forum by clicking on 'reply' to the survey message. You can also join in the discussion going on in our discussion forum. Thank you to Amy for responding to the survey in the forum and for suggesting the new WRITERS ON WRITING section. In return, we are sending Amy a double-pass to the King of Kong. Amy is an active participant in our e-community forum.

There's a link in our e-community forum to the Copyright Agency Limited which can answer your questions about copyright, including advice about digital copyright.

All this and more at our E-community, which we aim to make as positive and interactive an experience as possible, with a group atmosphere and plenty of interaction between members of our network. The discussions are moderated.

Please join us in the forum - go to http://www.alumni.uts.edu.au and log on; then click on Communities and then Writers' Network. To find the survey - click on 'Suggest a Topic' in the Writers' Network forum and then click on 'Survey for Writers' Network'.

You can find back issues of our e-zine online at http://www.alumni.uts.edu.au/networks/writers/index.html

Please note that all contributions and comments by members published in our monthly e-zine are those of the individual author and that all responsibility for accuracy and liability for comments made in contributions lie with the author of the contribution.

Contributions remain the copyright of the individual author and no copy or reproduction should be made without prior consultation with the author.

Please send contributions for the UTS Writers' Network MARCH 08 E-zine by FEBRUARY 16th, 2008 if you want to be sure they are included.

Wishing you all a prolific New Year.

Sharon.

NEWS FROM OUR NETWORK

From Joanna
Establishing Writing Groups
Would be great to get some face to face writing groups happening around Sydney for graduates of the UTS writing program. The idea would be to encourage writing product. Many of us have left university and still want to write our great screenplay or novel. Perhaps meeting with like-minded writers would help to actually get the word onto the page rather than just thinking about it - perhaps others are writing but are needing feedback. Writing groups of four or five would be large enough and meeting monthly would be realistic enough to achieve a good deal of writing over the selected period of time. Groups might like to meet on a continuous basis or be goal oriented, for example, meeting for six months or so to complete a specific project. What do you think?
I'm proposing the following writing group to start:

Writing group in Paddington/Woollahra
Project interests: Narrative and screen writing
Initial project would be screenplay
contact: Joanna (Masters in Prof Writing)
jodinn@theplanet.net.au

Sharon adds that you can put forward proposals for a writing group in our monthly e-zine (send to Sharon.P.Rundle@alumni.uts.edu.au ) and in our Writers' Network e-Community at http://www.alumni.uts.edu.au where those who are interested can reply to your messages in the forum. You can also list your writing group in our e-zine under WRITERS' GROUPS.

If we do have a number of groups formed and you want to run them under the umbrella of the UTS Writers' Network, we'll need someone to co-ordinate the groups, of course.

$ WIN A DOUBLE-PASS TO

THE KING OF KONG
Dendy Films are releasing the drama documentary film THE KING OF KONG and we have FREE Double -Passes for you. These tickets can be used over the weekend of Fri 22nd Feb - Sun 24th Feb at any participating cinema.

Billy Mitchell, hot sauce mogul and named the "Gamer of the Century" in the 1980s, scored 874,300 points in Donkey Kong-a record many thought would never be beaten. After stumbling across this record online in 2003, Steve Wiebe-a high school science teacher-perfected his game every night when his family went to bed and not only surpassed Mitchell's record but ended up with 1,000,000 points, a score all thought was impossible. Steve quickly became a celebrity in his hometown, while meanwhile Billy Mitchell hatched a plan to reclaim his fallen Donkey Kong record…

"It's all true-every magical, exhilarating, infuriating, dumbfounding, jaw-dropping second"
Robert Wilonsky, The Village Voice

There's more drama in this documentary than in most serious Oscar contenders. A marriage is on the line, integrity is tested, and friendships falter--all in the name of a video game called Donkey Kong. THE KING OF KONG may inspire both tears and frustrated sighs, but it's most remarkable for its humour. This is a hilarious documentary that enlightens as it entertains. While Steve is an audience favourite, Billy is a Machiavellian mastermind that rivals any villain from a narrative film. Sometimes truth is stranger than fiction, and the people who populate THE KING OF KONG are as fascinating as any screenwriter's creation.

We have 9 FREE Double-Passes to see THE KING OF KONG over the weekend of Fri 22nd Feb - Sun 24th Feb at any participating cinema. The first 10 people to email Sharon.P.Rundle@alumni.uts.edu.au will each win a Double-Pass. Please include your full name and postal address if you want your double-pass posted to you - or winners can pick up their tickets from the UTS Alumni office.

Congratulations to Amy who has won a double-pass to this film for responding to the survey in the writers' network e-community forum and suggesting a new section, WRITERS ON WRITING, for our E-zine.

WRITERS ON WRITING

I am not attempting a self analysis. The household which presented itself to me as both strange and normal encouraged me to observe. My mother was given to moods. Storms blew up unexpectedly, were savage and disappeared again as quickly … I became by nature and circumstance a placator and learned to read every change in the eye, every crease in the brow. I am still a placator. Other people's households, if I am a guest, inadvertently trouble me and in my own house I am not able to work if there is some problem or unhappiness which needs sorting out or comforting. The best time for me to write is when other people are asleep. I am not needed in their dreams. I have developed the habit of writing for some hours during the night, working from the quick notes made during the day.

I cannot explain why I am a fiction writer unless the explanation comes in part from a response to my experience of the world in which I grew up and to the strange new world in which we exist today. I do not maintain that a writer should conceal her private life. What must come first are the words which must not be twisted to fit some preconceived image of the writer. Sometimes what is most important after infancy is the experience which finds expression only in writing. It is the word which is not spoken, the resolve which is not kept which become a part of the created. It is as if these things emerge from hidden pathways in an unexpected form. Writing fiction is not easy for me; to write facts is almost impossible.

There is an excitement in exploring characters and in seeing how they react with each other in different situations. I have always kept diaries and journals ever since I was a child. Lately I have noticed that I do not want to write in the journal because of a feeling that I am encouraging sad thoughts and increasing anxiety by dwelling at length on troublesome things and writing about them. I prefer now to retain the ability to make the quick note of truth and awareness, to notice some small thing about a person, a stranger - perhaps someone choosing knitting wool in the supermarket, something like that - and move into imaginative fiction from the small truthful moment, the little picture, the idea which is so slender it hardly seems to matter. And then suddenly I am exploring human feelings and reasons.
Elizabeth Jolley.

USEFUL BOOKS ON THE CRAFT OF WRITING AND EDITING

English A - Z The Essential Handbook
A very useful book by UTS Alumni Writers' Network member, Lyndall Hough. Lyndall's book has an alphabetical list of terms used in the study of English, including traditional and new media terms. Words have a pronunciation guide beside them where needed and cross section has a number of sample texts which have notated examples of many of the alphabetically listed terms.

The text was reviewed in English in Australia No 137, The Journal of the Australian Association for the Teaching of English. This particular edition was titled A Guide to Texts and Resources. The review was very favourable and summed up as "highly recommended". The book would be a useful text for anyone who writes, or studies English. Published Heinemann in 2002.
