Writers' Network Update November 2007

UTS ALUMNI WRITERS' NETWORK E-ZINE

NOVEMBER 2007

The Writers' Network: UTS Writers in the Park at The Hughenden was our first social event on Sunday 21 October at The Hughenden Boutique Hotel in Woollahra.

Writers' Network Committee member, Susanne Gervay chaired the event, offered the venue and arranged the lunch and seating, for which we'd like to thank her profusely. The UTS Alumni & Development Office provided the catering for our event and they, too, have our heartfelt thanks. The writers in our network who attended got to know each other a little better, read their work to an appreciative audience and enjoy the delicious lunch.

I'd also like to give a vote of thanks and appreciation to Izanda Ford, who was our Communication Coordinator & Writers' Network E-zine distributor this year and who is moving on to a beaut new job at the Australian Film Commission. Za was always available when we needed her and ready to assist - and has been such a pleasure to work with. Unfortunately, she wasn't able to attend our first social event so we were unable to thank her in person. Za says she'll continue her Writers' Network membership, which is good news. We welcome Nisha Brooks as our new contact - and hope we won't keep you too busy, Nisha.

We surveyed those at the lunch to ask about future events, the e-zine and our e-community. Everyone who attended asked for more events in the future, everyone would like more events at The Hughenden - and some would also like events held at UTS and other locations. The most popular answer to the type of event favoured was: workshop with authors/and or writing tutors; followed by Lunch social meeting and readings - only one nominated cocktail parties. This feedback gives us a clear idea on what to organise for future events.

Many of you read the e-zine (that was heartening) and some of you said you'd be interested in submitting to our e-zine as a regular or occasional contributor - what are you waiting for? Please send in your contributions, we welcome them; some said you'd even be willing to help proofread, which I'd also welcome as Carol Mara now has other more pressing commitments and we could do with the help. Would you email me if you indicated that you're willing to proofread?

About half present at the lunch have visited our e-community, some regularly - and I'm hoping those of you who haven't visited it yet will take a look and see what's going on there - and that it will encourage you to join in or start a discussion.

We're always interested in hearing from you, our network members, about how we can improve the network to better cater for your needs and interests. Thanks to all who completed the survey at our lunch. The survey is now posted in our on-line community forum so that all network members can register their answers by clicking on 'reply' to the message. To find us go to http://www.alumni.uts.edu.au and log on; then click on Communities and then Writers' Network. To find the survey - click on 'Suggest a Topic' in the Writers' Network forum and then click on 'Survey for Writers' Network'.

During our lunch meeting, a question was raised regarding writing about Indigenous Australians. Anita Heiss has written papers on the subject and some are available on the Australian Society of Authors website: http://www.asauthors.org

Writing about Indigenous Australia. Anita Heiss

Australian Copyright vs Indigenous Intellectual and Cultural Property Rights. Anita Heiss
http://www.asauthors.org/lib/pdf/Heiss_Australian_Copyright_vs_Indigenous_Intellectual_and_Cultural_PropertyRights_.pdf

Another topic that arose was copyright and WebPages. The Copyright Agency Limited at http://www.copyright.com.au/ can answer your questions about copyright. It has advice about digital copyright and other information at: http://www.copyright.com.au/news%20releases/29_04_02.htm

There's also a website called Copyleft which is a general method for making a program or other work free, which you can find at http://www.gnu.org/copyleft/

Thanks to Dendy Films we had double-passes to the exclusive preview screening of the film "Angel" to give away at our first social event.

Another event worth noting is the 2007 End of Year UTS:Alumni Celebration and Reunion on Friday 16 November. The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ross Milbourne extends an invitation to you. Remember to put the Alumni End of Year Reception into your diary, more details below.

For more dates for your diary, scroll down for news of major Australian publishers & Bloomsbury USA at the International Children's and YA Writers Conference in 2008; as well as new competitions, opportunities, workshops and courses for writers of all genres.

If you haven't visited our e-community yet, we aim to make this as positive and interactive an experience as possible and to create a group atmosphere; interaction between members of our network is the goal. The discussions are moderated. Please join us in the forum. To see what's going on and to join in or start a discussion, please go to: http://www.alumni.uts.edu.au.

Join us in a word game in the discussion forum and use that as an ice-breaker if you like. You'll find guidelines for giving and receiving constructive criticism and a discussion thread where you can post writing for comment and give feedback and peer support to each other through our e-community - and much more.

You can find our e-zine online at http://www.alumni.uts.edu.au/networks/writers/index.html

The September issue is at http://www.alumni.uts.edu.au/networks/writers/September2007.html

Please note that all contributions and comments by members published in our monthly e-zine are those of the individual author and that all responsibility for accuracy and liability for comments made in contributions lie with the author of the contribution.

Contributions remain the copyright of the individual author and no copy or reproduction should be made without prior consultation with the author.

Please send contributions for the UTS Writers' Network DECEMBER 07 E-zine by November 16th, 2007 if you want to be sure they are included.

Sharon.

USEFUL BOOKS ON THE CRAFT OF WRITING AND EDITING

ENGLISH A - Z THE ESSENTIAL HANDBOOK
A very useful book by UTS Alumni Writers' Network member, Lyndall Hough. Lyndall's book has an alphabetical list of terms used in the study of English, including traditional and new media terms. Words have a pronunciation guide beside them where needed and cross section has a number of sample texts which have notated examples of many of the alphabetically listed terms.

The text was reviewed in English in Australia No 137, The Journal of the Australian Association for the Teaching of English. This particular edition was titled A Guide to Texts and Resources. The review was very favourable and summed up as "highly recommended". The book would be a useful text for anyone who writes, or studies English. Published Heinemann in 2002.
