Writers' Network Update September 2007

UTS ALUMNI WRITERS' NETWORK E-ZINE

SEPTEMBER 2007

The UTS Networks Conference on the weekend of August 3 and 4 was worthwhile and productive. The Writers' Network can be congratulated for being the most active user of e-communities in terms of posts and members.

Plans for 2008
- Involve alumni more closely with Faculties
- Develop the range of alumni benefits - growing all the time
- Develop mentoring program
- Involve alumni in 20th anniversary
- DVC (Ext) & Registrar Dr Ros Dubs is developing an External Engagement Strategy which involves alumni
- Hold a reunion event?
- Engage more alumni in development

We're interested in whether you would attend a reunion event for all alumni, perhaps a cocktail party, in the 20th anniversary year (2008)? You can email me or the alumni office to express your interest in attending a reunion event.

We have 60 members now, our membership comprises writers working towards publication; published authors; and well-established authors some of whom are representatives of other writers' organisations, such as writers' centres and the Australian Society of Authors. Perhaps we could get to know each other better. Are you interested in a social or other event for our writers' network? If so, please email me with your suggestions for time/place/type of event. The alumni office has generously offered to help out with refreshments. UTS is the preferred venue for financial reasons but if you would like to put forward a viable alternative, we're interested in all suggestions.

The Faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences network and the Media Arts Production (MAP) network have invited us to develop closer ties with them and I'll be contacting them soon to see how we can arrange this.

The On-line Business Directory is building slowly - 339 alumni have registered. The layout is being customised to make it more practical and user-friendly. The UTS Online Business Directory is available to all alumni. The Alumni E-community web-pages and Business Directory are all fee-free.

A discussion arose about mentorship during the conference. The Business Network has a thriving and successful mentorship program, where mentors provide a voluntary service. I explained that published authors average an annual income of approximately $11,000 and many depend on mentoring, tutoring and other related work to supplement their income. There are also other mentorship programs offered by the ASA, Varuna and the NSW Writers' Centre to consider. What are your views on setting up a mentorship program within our network? If you are an established author, would you consider mentoring on a volunteer basis so that it could be a free program? If you are an author working towards publication, how would you benefit from being a mentee? Do you think there should be a cost involved? Or do you think there should be a fee and if so, how much? You can email me with your comments or better still post them to our writers' network e-community discussion forum at www.alumni.uts.edu.au.

It was agreed that we would make our Writers' Network e-zine more user friendly by using headings with links so you can find and read the different sections without having to scroll through the whole e-zine.

Unfortunately we had NO response to our last Dendy ticket giveaway. Fortunately we've been offered more - this time Five FREE double passes to see the film AWAY FROM HER (opening October 4) valid for the Advance Screening weekend (September 28-30) at any cinema screening the film, more details below. Simply email me asap - the first five responses will each win a double-pass to see this film, more details below.

There are discussions underway in our online forum at www.alumni.uts.edu.au. Or you might like to play the word game. A new message has guidelines for giving and receiving constructive criticism and a new discussion thread has opened where you can post writing for comment. I hope you'll enjoy and take advantage of this opportunity to give feedback, comments and support to each other through our e-community. As always, though, its success depends on you.

You can find our e-zine online at http://www.alumni.uts.edu.au/networks/writers/index.html
The September issue is at http://www.alumni.uts.edu.au/networks/writers/September2007.html

Please note that all contributions and comments by members published in our monthly e-zine are those of the individual author and that all responsibility for accuracy and liability for comments made in contributions lie with the author of the contribution.

Contributions remain the copyright of the individual author and no copy or reproduction should be made without prior consultation with the author.

Please send contributions for the UTS Writers' Network OCTOBER 07 E-zine by SEPTEMBER 16th, 07 if you want to be sure they are included.

Please scroll down now for news and contributions from our Writers' Network members, as well as other news and opportunities of interest to writers, useful websites and items that may stir your interest and imagination.

$ WIN A DOUBLE-PASS

AWAY FROM HER

Stars Oscar-winner, Julie Christie, in a role which is perhaps the most critically acclaimed performance of the year so far in the US and is garnering a lot of Oscar buzz for her again. The film is based on Alice Munro's story, The Bear Came Over the Mountain.

Sarah Polley's triumphant directorial debut starring Oscar-winner Julie Christie is an adaptation of Alice Munro's story about the effects of Alzheimer's on a long and happy marriage. A man coping with the institutionalisation of his wife faces an epiphany when she transfers her affections to another man, who is also a patient at the nursing home.

In cinemas October 4
(Advance screenings September 28 - 30)

AWAY FROM HER is also one of the best reviewed films of the year to date - this link will take you to a list of reviews http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/away_from_her/

Julie Christie's performance in the film has been singled out as "Oscar-worthy" by Newsweek; Washington Post; USA Today; the Chicago Tribune and countless others.

USEFUL BOOKS ON THE CRAFT OF WRITING AND EDITING

English A - Z The Essential Handbook
A very useful book by UTS Alumni Writers' Network member, Lyndall Hough. Lyndall's book has an alphabetical list of terms used in the study of English, including traditional and new media terms. Words have a pronunciation guide beside them where needed and cross section has a number of sample texts which have notated examples of many of the alphabetically listed terms.

The text was reviewed in English in Australia No 137, The Journal of the Australian Association for the Teaching of English. This particular edition was titled A Guide to Texts and Resources. The review was very favourable and summed up as "highly recommended". The book would be a useful text for anyone who writes, or studies English. Published Heinemann in 2002.
