Students empowered by education
"I never dreamed I would be studying at such a world-class university when I fled Iran with my family in mid-2001 because of religious persecution. I was 16 when I arrived in Australia and spent the next two and a half years in detention centres.
After my family gained temporary protection visas, I started studying IT at TAFE. Then I learned that UTS offers scholarships to holders of Temporary Protection Visas. After submitting my TAFE results and completing an English proficiency short-course, UTS offered me a place in its IT program. UTS gave me an opportunity when I thought it impossible and I will be forever grateful."

3rd Year: Bachelor of IT
"I was doing well in my civil engineering course and living with my family about two hours from UTS. Then I suffered a serious injury playing football which left me a paraplegic. When I returned to uni after rehab I found couldn't manage the long daily journey.
Fortunately, I was eligible for a scholarship which helped me to move closer to university and buy a special computer and technology such as dictation software."

"In 2005 I was awarded a Bruce and Carol Kendall Undergraduate Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship has helped me to buy a computer desk, textbooks and other things to help me with my studies. Without the scholarship, I don't know what I would have done. As I'm on a disability pension, I could not qualify for a loan.
The scholarship has also enabled me to purchase much needed personal items like vitamins and to replace special orthopedic shoes. I am so grateful for this assistance."

Bachelor of Education in Adult Education
"I was 19 and in my second year of the Bachelor of Medical Science course when my father left the family. One of my three younger brothers has a serious chronic illness. Because my mother spends most of her time caring for him and the rest of the family she can't do paid work. I work part-time, but I needed emergency financial help to pay for text books. UTS gave me a grant of $500. It might not seem like a lot, but it made all the difference and meant I could buy the things I needed to continue my studies."
